Details
Hamilton Senior Center is located on the ground floor of our first residential building, the Hamilton House, with its own separate entrance. It first opened in 1973 with full funding from the Bureau of Purchased Social Services for Adults (BPSSA). The Center offers many classes and activities, including a walking club, restorative yoga, and belly dancing. Lunch is served six days a week, and coffee and snacks are available in the morning. The Center is open on weekdays until 5:00pm but on Tuesdays stays open until 6:00pm. In 2012, the New York City Department for the Aging offered senior center providers with DftA contracts, the opportunity to redesign their programs. This was the first such invitation in over a decade. With two centers (Hamilton and Hargrave) within 2 blocks of each other, Project FIND took direct steps to integrate the programs more fully. All meals—breakfast and lunch—are now offered at the Hamilton Center six days a week. Hargrave, which has been rechristened the Annex, is a dedicated program space, where people can participate in dance, yoga, tai chi, or receive a chair massage in an accommodating environment. The consolidation of the centers has allowed us to add the position of activities coordinator, who will draw upon the resources of the surrounding community to build new programming at the Annex. The combined programs will benefit roughly 170 persons per day.
