Daytime programs with supervision, activities and health support for older adults who go home each evening.
Listings come from state licensing, certification, contract and program directories, adult day association directories, information and referral directories and the NYC Aging registry in 51 states. Each state's page names its directory and the date it was checked. Programs that are not in those directories are not listed, so this is not every adult day or social day program.

What is adult day services?
Adult day services provide a safe, supervised place for older adults to spend the day: activities, meals, help with personal care and, in health-model programs, nursing oversight and medication administration. Participants live at home and attend for part or all of the day, which gives family caregivers time to work or rest.
Who it's for
✓Older adults who live at home but should not spend the day alone
✓People who need supervision, medication help or health monitoring during the day
✓Family caregivers who work or need regular respite
A senior center offers drop-in activities for independent older adults. An adult day service is a structured, supervised program for people who need care or monitoring during the day, and in most states it is licensed or certified by the state.
Who pays for adult day services?
Many families pay privately by the day. Medicaid waiver programs, the VA and some long-term care insurance policies cover adult day services for people who qualify. Ask each center which programs it accepts.
What should I ask on a visit?
Ask about staff-to-participant ratios, nursing coverage, how medications are handled, the daily schedule, transportation, and what happens in an emergency. Ask to see the state licence or certification.
