What are memory care?

Memory care is specialized residential care for people living with Alzheimer's disease or another dementia. It is usually provided in a secured assisted living building or neighborhood, with staff trained in dementia care, structured routines and round-the-clock supervision. On this site a facility is listed under Memory Care only when the state's own licensing record shows a dementia-care designation.

Common questions

How are facilities chosen for this list?

Only from the state's own licensing records. A facility is listed when the state's current roster shows its dementia care license, memory care endorsement, dementia-program classification or Alzheimer's special care disclosure. We never list a facility as memory care because of its name or its own description of services.

Does a facility without the designation not care for people with dementia?

Not necessarily. Many assisted living facilities serve residents with dementia without a separate state designation, and states differ in what they require. Ask each facility what dementia care it provides.

What do the state designations mean?

It depends on the state. Some states issue a separate dementia care license or a memory care endorsement that a facility must hold to provide memory care. Others do not license memory care separately: they record that a facility discloses an Alzheimer's special care unit, or classify its assisted living program as dementia-specific. Each state page explains its own designation and links to the state source.

What should I ask on a visit?

Ask about staff training in dementia care, staffing levels at night, how the building is secured, how behaviors are handled, what activities are offered, and what happens if care needs increase.
