I grew up in Murray County, graduated from MCHS, and lived there until 1982. I stumbled upon this website and was flabbergasted that such an organization was named after such a corrupt politician; At least he was when sheriff in Murray County. It was widely known that he took monetary bribes from the 'infamous' RIdley family for 'looking away' from their illegal bootlegging operations. My uncle worked for the Ridleys then; I heard the stories, In addition, Mr Poag 'did favors' for votes: for example, handing out 'free' Georgia drivers licenses for votes. I know this to be true for my own mother was a recipient of one of those. I remember the very day my father confronted Mr Poag on our front porch with that practice. My mother received her license the next day. Again, Flabberghasted.
