Comment: | The Neptune Township Senior Center is a Public Health Gem for our Community As a former NJ Assistant Commissioner of Health, a former President and current Executive Board Member of the New Jersey Public Health Association and a Neptune Township resident senior citizen I am amazed at what the Neptune Township Senior Center does to improve the public health of our community. Located at 1607 Corlies Avenue, the facility is easily accessible for those with disabilities and provides wheelchair access and designated parking spaces. Transportation is not a barrier since vans can pick up seniors and take them back home at the end of the day. The health and nutritional status of participants are important considerations in the services offered. Numerous adult fitness programs are available, and adapted for participants of varying abilities, including Chair Yoga and even Line Dancing. Both breakfast and lunch are offered for a small donation, along with baked goods which can be taken home free of charge. A VNA nurse visits to provide blood pressure checks and is available to discuss medication questions and medical concerns. A social worker also holds office hours to provide free individual counseling and answer questions about Medicaid, SNAP, homecare and more. The social well-being of participants is also addressed. The calendar is full of classes and activities, along with shopping trips to buy groceries and other necessities. During the day there is a constant, positive hum of conversation among seniors which promotes belonging and decreases feelings. Specific topics are also addressed- NJ State Senator Vin Gopal recently visited to address issues that are important to seniors, including taxes, rising costs, veteran’s programs, and homelessness. We are most fortunate to have former Neptune Township Mayor, Randy Bishop, as Director of the Neptune Township Department of Senior Services and Senior Center. The outstanding services and programs reach seniors throughout our diverse community promoting health and well-being. |
