Overview
WCC Senior Programs are central to our values and mission of strengthening the community as a whole. Serving the needs of seniors is especially important because over 30% of the Waikiki population are over the age of 60. Additionally, many of our seniors live alone and without family members close by to help support them. The community has many resources to keep seniors living active, fulfilling lives. Unfortunately, finding those resources and effectively utilizing them can be complex and challenging. As a result, many people in need are unable to access the services that could help them. WCC acts as an intermediary through our Senior Assistance Coordinators to make utilizing different resources possible for anyone who needs them. WCC Senior Programs address the whole person, providing physical and emotional support, along with counseling and referrals. In this way, we are able to address the multiple challenges that most clients face whether it be housing, food insecurity, health or other types of assistance needed. WCC also provides a wide variety of educational and social activities to help maintain physical, cognitive skills, emotional health, and independence to avoid premature aging and institutionalization. These activities include dance classes (hula, line, tap), yoga, language classes, music, arts and crafts, and even group outings. Keeping active is key to combating loneliness, isolation, and other factors that contribute to premature decline and help seniors live independently for as long as possible. Many of our members have said that coming to the Center is the only consistent and meaningful contact they have with others. This makes the Senior Program integral to strengthen the community as a whole. We rely heavily on support from our volunteers and donors to make this program possible.
