Details
Senior Citizens of Kodiak, Inc., (SCOK) was incorporated October 30, 1973 in order to provide a full range of health, education and social services to people 60 and over on Kodiak Island. Services began from an apartment at the Cherrier - King Building and several years later moved to the community room at Bayview Terrace Apartments, a housing complex for seniors where congregate and home delivered meals transportation and homemaking services began. The number of participating seniors grew to the point where a new 8,000 square feet senior center was built in 1985. Since then new programs have been added to the roster of services. In 1991, an adult day program, Island Cove, was opened in the community room of Bayview Terrace. This program, which is funded by the Division of Senior & Disabilities Services, has a capacity of 18 clients who have Alzheimer’s disease, are recovering from a stroke, or who need monitoring or socialization during the day. Island Cove Adult Day Program moved to the remodeled lower level of the Kodiak Senior Center in 1996. The Family Caregiver Program was added in 2003 and serves seniors and their caregivers with information, referrals, respite, Lifeline and support. Senior In Home Services were added in 2006 and offers case management and chore service for seniors. Transportation is provided through Kodiak Area Transit System (KATS) a public transit system.
