When the Skyway Senior Center closed in 2017, after a decade of serving the downtown senior population, library and church leaders recognized the need to provide a place for seniors to go to socialize and interact with others. The Magnet Senior Center, run by both Westminster Presbyterian Church and the Minneapolis Central Library, was born. At the Center, seniors living in the Minneapolis downtown area gather and meet other seniors, engage in health and wellness programs, discuss history and current events, play games, make crafts or just enjoy a relaxing cup of coffee in a welcoming setting. Events and activities are free and vary by day. Seniors can choose to participate in an activity or just sit and relax with a cup of coffee, a cookie and a newspaper. Seniors of all faiths are welcome to stop by for all or part of the morning, as often as they like. The program is drop-in; No reservations are required. The Magnet Senior Center is open four days a week. Individuals age 55+ of all faiths are welcome.
