Overview

The Senior Center was added to Friends in Action’s programs in 2008 when we started the “Visit with Friends Senior Coffee House” in a local church. In 2009, the City of Ellsworth and the Downeast Family YMCA invited Friends in Action to offer social programs for seniors at the former Bryant E. Moore School. When the school facility was renovated for use as a community center, the Friends in Action Senior Center expanded to offer many programs in Health & Wellness, Socialization and Enrichment. Every day there is something going on! There are comfortable places to read a book or access the WiFi, participate in a fitness class or work out in the fitness room, and a senior lunch program (cooked on site in partnership with the YMCA) is offered twice a week. The Senior Center is located at 5 General Moore Way, off State Street, in Ellsworth. Hours are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm most weekdays. Membership is free and many programs have no charge. There is a fee schedule for fitness classes and for meals, as well as some enrichment classes. We ask that everyone register when entering the building to keep everyone safe. The “Senior” in Senior Center is a vague term; we generally mean adults over the age of 50, but many of our programs are open to people of all ages and the community center is open to everyone in Hancock County, ages 0 – 99+. We share the space with the YMCA Early Learning Center for young children, so it is an active and vibrant place. Individuals who need special care or assistance should be accompanied by a caregiver. For first-time visitors, we are happy to give you a tour. You will find that you are soon at home here and have many new friends!
