Most of these towns are within a thirty-mile radius of the Catawba Reservation. This program is available to any Nation citizen age 55 or older. Spouses are eligible and welcomed to attend. Title VI funding helps to provide meal delivery services to homebound elders residing in York County. A well-balanced home delivered meal is served five days a week to those elders unable to leave their home due to chronic illnesses. These services are provided through direct contact from Eldercare staff and/or volunteers. Congregate meals are also provided to elders capable of attending the Senior Center programs. Nation citizens and their spouses receive one meal a day Monday thru Friday. Nutritional Analysis of meals and menus are supplied to all seniors accepting these services. These benefits help keep our Elders healthy and prevent the need for other costly medical interventions. Besides meals, services include nutrition screening, education, and nutrition assessment and counseling is provided. Along with giving nutritional services, caregiver support (Respite), and supportive services the program promotes socialization of our older Nation citizens. A wide variety of activities promote physical well-being, learning experiences, and individual creativity. An activity that provides satisfaction and exercise is our raised bed gardening program. The Catawba Eldercare Program is much more than providing a nutritious meal and activities. It's about listening to our seniors, understanding their likes and needs. It's about respecting their dignity and uniqueness. It's about getting to know them personally and understanding their history. It's about appreciating an individual who may not be fast or strong anymore but whose spirit is still young at heart.
