This year the Portland Senior Center became The Waverly Center, a place for seniors and their friends. This name change does not change our mission or our focus. What it does do is make the idea of senior services more palatable for those who are reluctant to identify as a senior in spite of what their birth certificate may say. It also lets people know immediately where we are located and alludes to our history as the former site of the Waverly Printing Company. In modern day advertising jargon, it helps us to create a “brand”, evident in our Waverly Salon, Waverly Artisans and Camp Waverly. Although we provide senior services first and foremost, we are serving people from age 50 to 100, all with very different needs. The Waverly Center, a place for seniors and their friends, pays tribute to the “Original Seniors” who had the vision to get the center built and to those coming along. It also recognizes the role the center plays for ALL the citizens of Portland. We strive to be a welcoming place where we can help people with life's transitions. Our focus is on people aged 50 and over. Your fifties can be a time of change with an empty nest, concerns about looming retirement and maintaining one's good health. We hope to help you handle these transitions through social and recreational programs, educational opportunities, social occasions, travel and referral to other agencies with the services you may need.
